The Help

August 24, 2010

Speaking of recent books, probably the most recently published book that I’ve read is The Help by Kathryn Stocket. From its People Magazine description, “The 2009 mega seller, written by first-time novelist Kathryn Stockett, chronicles the conflicted relationships between black housekeepers and their white employers in a pre-Civil-Rights-era Mississippi. Hundreds of thousands of readers have kept it on The New York Times Best Sellers list for more than 47 weeks – due in large part to Stockett’s enchanting mix of female characters, from the coming-of-age heroine Miss Skeeter to the wise and thoughtful maid Aibileen.”

I read this novel back in March and found it truly fantastic. The voices of the three narrative characters are so distinct and fleshed out and the plot twists were jaw dropping. I hear they are making a movie out of it (like ya do). Oh man can we go into my dream cast please???

Skeeter- Someone like Anne Hathaway or Amy Adams. Or actually Amy Adams would make a pretty amazing Hilly.

Aibileen- For the love of god this needs to be Viola Davis

Minny- Not sure, maybe Chandra Wilson (Dr. Bailey!)

UPDATE!!!

Sooo apparently shooting began this summer down in Mississippi and the cast is as follows (with my notable reaction):

Skeeter- Emma Stone (the Easy A chick? Really? Blerg)

Aibileen-Viola Davis (Yesssssssssss!)

Minny- Octavia Spencer (Never heard of her. Hope she’s good)

Hilly- Bryce Dallas Howard (meh, Amy Adams would have been so much better)

Skeeter’s Mom Charlotte: Allison Janney (Cool)

A bunch of semi-unknowns are playing Elizabeth and Celia, and that Piz guy from Veronica Mars is playing Skeeter’s potential love interest, Stuart. Blerg, I can’t stand that guy and his Justin Beiber hair and creepy smile.

Well, at least they got Viola Davis.
